Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is a public, coeductional historically black university situated in Cheyney, which is an unincorporated community within Thornbury Township, Chester County and Thornbury Township, Delaware County, in the US state of Pennsylvania.
Cheyney University was officially established in 1837, being the oldest historically black university in USA, and it is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. The institution's name was changed several times, over the years, first starting as the Institute for Colored Youth, its current name being adopted in 1983, when it joined the State System of Higher Education.
Cheyney's athletic teams are known as the Wolves, and they compete in NCAA Division II, for various sports, for both men and women, including basketball, in which the university has one of the most storied athletic programs in NCAA Division II history, the men's basketball program being 7th all-time in NCAA win percentage, including 4 Final Fours, 16 PSAC conference championships, and one National Championship, won in 1978.
The distinctive colors of the Wolves are blue and white.
